February 8 - Reverse Glass Painting: Hearts Are Wild

“Hearts are wild—that’s why ribs are cages.” It’s a sentiment for Valentine’s Day and beyond, and you’ll explore it in this multi-faceted shadowbox class. The basic technique will be Verre Églomisé, otherwise known as reverse-glass painting. This French term literally translates to “tinsel painting” and describes a craft that was very popular in the gaslight era. You’ll create a beautifully layered art piece through layered reverse-glass painting, mirroring, gilding, and etching techniques. Bethany Mann’s modern twist on the shadowbox will also show you how to incorporate papers and rubberstamping to tell a story in three dimensions. To finish your shadowbox, you can add a cast wax heart with a small LED element to make it beat. Or if you’d prefer, you can use the materials to make something completely different. Your completed piece will make a great ornament or gift.
