February 16 - Duntonian: Original Art Penmanship

This workshop will introduce a slightly different form to your repertoire of pointed-pen styles, the semi-angular shaded script known as Duntonian. Originated by Alvin R. Dunton in 1841, Duntonian initially seems similar to the later-devised Spencerian Script, but with methods more in similarity to English Roundhand, as every downstroke is shaded in the original form, and much more careful attention is employed to draw the letters. The main structure is oval-based, set at a 45-degree slant, with elongated ascenders and descenders, and can be written exclusively with finger movement. This uncommon hand is an ideal intermediate-skill pointed-pen form to learn. Its beauty rests in the rationality involved in producing it, its elegant, legible simplicity, and its strong structure. Duntonian is an ideal script for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students.
