The Zhen Xian Bao, also known as Chinese Thread Book, is a little known folk art practiced by the Miao in southwest China, as well as the Han in northern China. This elegant book is comprised of a series of collapsible origami compartments, giving you as many pockets as you need—eleven, fifteen, or even more! Traditionally, these books have been used as a portable kit containing thread, needles, paper patterns, and, sometimes, a photo of a loved one. You can build yours to contain whatever you like. Housed in a simple fold-over cover tied with a ribbon, your book will contain delightful surprises to discover as the book is opened and layer after layer of pockets is explored. In this all-day workshop, Alice will teach you several origami techniques for making a thread book with eleven pockets. She will also teach you which papers work best for various sizes of multi-folded structures. You’ll finish your book with handmade book cloth that Alice has created for you using eco-printing, a printing process using direct contact of plants and flowers with cloth. You’ll leave class with your completed thread book, the knowledge to recreate the origami structures made in class, as well as a printout of resources for taking your practice further.
