Drawing is a teachable skill. The reason it seems unattainable to many is that we look, but we don’t see. This class series is centered on learning how to see in order to draw, and is modeled on the approach developed by Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Her book posits that there are five perceptual skills. They are learning to see edges, spaces, relationships, light and shadows, and the whole (or gestalt). At the beginning of each class session, Alice will provide exercises that use a variety of drawing implements, grounds, and coloring agents to help you develop these perceptual skills. Drawings done from still-life arrangements will be in a realistic mode with individual artistic interpretation encouraged. Beginners are highly welcome, as are those who have some experience but would like to go further with their art. Both will find themselves in a positive and supporting environment. Though it is a group class, instruction is tailored to the individual. For example, in the same class and drawing from the same objects, one student might be working with pastels, another might be using watercolor, and yet another pen and ink.
